This month, get to know one of our decorative hardware consultants who has been helping customers’ houses become homes at Modern Hardware.

Meet Katie Vruggink:

What inspired you to become a decorative hardware consultant?

I have always enjoyed design and the homebuilding process. I have previous experience working in a hardwood flooring showroom as well as a plumbing, lighting, and appliance showroom. After a year-long stint of nannying, it was time for a change, and I came back to what I love; assisting homeowners, designers, and builders make beautiful and creative selections for their spaces.

What are some of the latest trends in decorative hardware that you’ve noticed?

Living finishes. It’s not for everyone or every space, but a solid bronze material or unlacquered brass finish offers a warmth and depth that other finishes just can’t.

How do you approach working with clients to select the perfect hardware for their project?

I like to get as much information as possible about the space the client is making selections for; finishes, paint colors, faucet style, etc, and how they want the space to function. My goal is for clients to select products that are aesthetically pleasing, but also functional.

What do you enjoy most about working as a decorative hardware consultant?

I love to use my product knowledge and knowledge of our showroom to make what usually starts as an overwhelming experience for clients a fun and enjoyable one.

What’s your favorite type of decorative hardware to work with and why?

Door hardware. A lot of homeowners don’t realize just how many options they have and how personalized/customized their selections can be.

What’s the most unique piece of decorative hardware you’ve ever seen or worked with?

And the most complicated? Mortise door hardware!

When you’re not working with decorative hardware, what are some of your hobbies or interests?

I enjoy reading, cooking my way through a new cookbook, watching tennis & going to LCA for a Detroit Red Wings game with my husband.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?

Introverted – I love assisting clients and being with friends & family, but time by myself is how I recharge.
